Sir James D. Wolfensohn, Who Led the World Bank and Chaired the IAS Board, Dies at 86

Sir James D. Wolfensohn, Chairman of Wolfensohn & Company, L.L.C. and a global champion of human rights, economic justice, scholarship, and the arts, died on Wednesday, November 25 at his home in Manhattan at the age of 86.

Wolfensohn was the ninth president of the World Bank, sworn into office on June 1, 1995, after being nominated by President Bill Clinton. A transformative and hands-on leader, Wolfensohn re-envisioned the Bank’s commitment to alleviating poverty, investing in sustainable development, and promoting social justice globally.

In 1979, Wolfensohn joined the Institute for Advanced Study’s Board of Trustees and became the Board’s longest-serving Chair (1986–2007). Wolfensohn had a passionate commitment to the Institute’s mission of enabling the world’s foremost scholars to conduct breakthrough research at the highest levels of academia.

Sir James David WolfensohnKBE, AO (1 December 1933 – 25 November 2020) was an Australian-American lawyer, investment banker, and economist who served as the ninth president of the World Bank Group (1995–2005). During his tenure at the World Bank, he is credited with the focus on poverty alleviation and a rethink on development financing, earning him recognition as a banker to the world's poor. In his other roles, he is credited with actions that brought Chrysler Corporation back from the brink of bankruptcy, and also improving the finances of major United States cultural institutions, including Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. He served two terms as President of the World Bank on the nomination of U.S. President Bill Clinton, and thereafter held various positions with charitable organizations and policy think-tanks including the Brookings Institution.

Sir James Wolfensohn (1933) was Chairman of Wolfensohn & Company, LLC, and was Chairman of Citigroup International Advisory Board (2006-2014). Sir James was President of the World Bank Group (1995-2005), and held the post of Special Envoy for Gaza disengagement for the quartet of the Middle East (2005-06). Sir James was Chairman Emeritus of the board of trustees of Carnegie Hall and of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC (1996). He was Chairman of the board of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University (1986-2007). He has served on the boards of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Rothschild Foundation, and many other such groups. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Member of the American Philosophical Society. He had B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Sydney and a M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business.
