Bangladesh’s veteran and celebrated folk singer Abdur Rahman Boyati, who had enchanted hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshi workers in Gulf countries with his lilting songs, passed away at Dhaka city’s Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital yesterday. He was 76.

Hospital sources said Boyati breathed his last at 7:30am.

He was under treatment at the hospital since after he had suffered a brain stroke three months back.

Born in 1939 in Dayaganj area under Sutrapur Police Station of the capital, Boyati had almost 500 solo albums of folk songs in his name.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Boyati and prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed her sympathy to the members of the bereaved family. Boyati was suffering from lung and kidney problems, high blood pressure and other old age ailments for quite some time.

People of eminence flocked to the hospital to pay their last tribute to the artist as soon news of his death spread.

Boyati, Abdur Rahman (1939-2013) was born on 1 January 1939 at Dayaganj in old Dhaka. He started practicing mystic songs at an early stage by his mother’s inspiration. His father’s name is Tota Miah and mother’s name is Mariyam Begum. Rahman Boyati was married to Khatun Zara.

He was introduced to the mystic dehatatya genre (which searches the existence of the Lord in the body of human beings) of his spiritual Guru Alaudding Boyati. Besides being a folk singer, he was also a lyricist, music composer, director and poet. Though he received fame mainly in boyati (folk) songs, he also excelled in all other forms of folk genre such as Jari, Palli, Marfoti, Murshidi, Dehatatya, Shari, and even Qawali.

Abdur Rahman Boyati made an immense contribution in popularizing folk songs to the general audience. Rahman’s song Mon Amar Deho Ghori Sondan Kori became immensely popular amongst the Bengali-speaking people all over the world. He will be remembered for his songs Ai Prithibi Jeman Ase-thik Temani Rabe, Din gele Ar Din Pabina, Ekdin Chithi Diye Haibe Dakati, De De Pal Tule De, Pirite

Abdur Rahman Boyati (1 January 1939 – 19 August 2013)[1] was a Bangladeshi folk singer. He was also a lyricist, music composer, director and poet.[1] He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh.[2] He is most notable for the hits "Mon Amar Deho Ghori Sondhan Kori", "Ei Prithibi Jemon Ache, Temni Pore Robe" and "Din Gele Ar Din Pabi Na".

Career

Boyati started to sing professionally in 1956. In 1982 he formed a group named Abdur Rahman’s Group.[1]

He was also an actor. He acted in Ashati, directed by Hafiz Uddin, in 1989.

Honors and awards

Boyati was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015. He was invited to a cultural show at the dinner party of George Bush Sr. held in the White House in 1990.[1] For his contribution to the music of Bangladesh, Boyati won six national awards in total.
