David Nesta "Ziggy" Marley (born 17 October 1968) is a Jamaican reggae musician. He is the son of reggae icon Bob Marley and Rita Marley. He led the family band Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers until 2002, with whom he released eight studio albums. After the disbandment, he launched a successful solo career, releasing eight solo studio albums on his own label, Tuff Gong Worldwide. Ziggy continues his father's practice of recording and self-releasing all of his music. He is an eight-time Grammy Award winner and a Daytime Emmy Award recipient.
Early life
David Nesta Marley was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on 17 October 1968.[1] He grew up in Trenchtown, a poor neighborhood of Kingston, and in Wilmington, Delaware, where he attended elementary school for a few years.[2] Ziggy grew up very active, playing soccer and running the mountains, a lifestyle passed on by his parents.[3] As the oldest son of Bob and Rita Marley, Ziggy grew up surrounded by music. When Caribbean Heritage Magazine (CHM) approached me to do an interview with Ziggy Marley, I was thrilled at the opportunity. My relationship with reggae music began while living in Jamaica in the 1970s. Growing up around the music industry with my Aunt, legendary Jamaican producer Sonia Pottinger, I had the unique opportunity to interact with many artists of that time. Very few of them were as important to me as Ziggy Marley and family.
My first time seeing Ziggy’s father, Bob Marley, perform was at a 1976 Caribbean festival in my hometown of Kingston, Jamaica. Bob had released his eighth album, “Rastaman Vibrations.” He captivated the audience with his songs, but a young David “Nesta” Marley stole the show. Ziggy, as he was nicknamed by his father, moved around the stage like a seasoned veteran. He is known for songs like "Tomorrow People", "Love Is My Religion" and "A Lifetime", He is the oldest son in the marriage between the singer Rita Anderson (Marley) and late legendary reggaeBob Marley. Ziggy learned Rastafari faith from his parents and had access to some of the world's best reggae musicians in the comp band of his father – the legendary reggae Wailers. Ziggy Marley first sat in on recording sessions with Bob Marley and the Wailers when he was around 10 years old. Joining with his three siblings to become The Melody Makers, Ziggy crafted his own soulful sound blending blues, RnB, hip-hop and roots reggae.
