Joko Widodo (Indonesian:[ˈdʒokowiˈdodo]; born 21 June 1961), popularly known as Jokowi, is an Indonesian politician, engineer, and businessman who served as the seventh president of Indonesia from 2014 to 2024. Previously a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), he was the country's first president to not emerge from the country's political or military elite. He previously served as governor of Jakarta from 2012 to 2014 and mayor of Surakarta from 2005 to 2012.

Jokowi was born and raised in a riverside slum in Surakarta. He graduated from Gadjah Mada University in 1985, and married his wife, Iriana, a year later.[2][3] He worked as a carpenter and a furniture exporter before being elected mayor of Surakarta in 2005.[4][5] He achieved national prominence as mayor and was elected governor of Jakartain 2012,[6] with Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as vice governor.[7][

In a country marred by dynastic politics and corruption, many Indonesians saw him as a revolutionary.

"In 2014, there was a slogan, 'Jokowi is one of us'. He was not a typical Indonesian politician," said political analyst Firman Noor from Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency.

"Everybody had high hopes for a better democracy."

Mr Widodo's administration had a somewhat shaky start, rushing into some policies only to backtrack on them later.

Over the years, he built a strong track record on economic growth and infrastructure development. His infrastructure push produced 16 new airports, 18 new ports, 36 dams and more than 2,000km (1,240 miles) of toll roads. Indonesia is expected to overtake Russia and the UK to become the world's sixth largest economy by 2027, according to IMF forecasts.

Abstract


This study explores the biographer’s appraisal towards Jokowi’s contradiction and struggle to remake Indonesia. The data were obtained purposively from the chapter five of the biography “Man of Contradiction: Joko Widodo and the Struggle to Remake Indonesia” (2020) and were analyzed by applying Martin and Rose’s appraisal framework (2007). The findings reveal that positive judgments were used to assess Jokowi's actions when he became his company CEO, business association chairman, Surakarta mayor, Jakarta governor, and Indonesia president; and negative judgments to criticize his leadership style and his administration’s weaknesses and strengths. The positive appreciation was given to Jokowi’s efforts on his decision to build infrastructures throughout Indonesia, while negative appreciation on Jokowi's administration that was deemed to have covered up cases of deaths and victims
