Alonzo King
Alonzo King has been called a visionary choreographer, who is altering the way we look at ballet. King calls his works âthought structuresâ created by the manipulation of energies that exist in matter through laws, which govern the shapes and movement directions of everything that exists.
King has works in the repertories of the Swedish Royal Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, Ballet Bejart, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Hong Kong Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. He has worked extensively in opera, television, and film. Known for collaborations, seminal works include People of the Forest (2001), choreographed with Baka artists from Central African Republic and Long River High Sky (2007), with Chinaâs Shaolin Monks. He has collaborated with actor Danny Glover, legendary jazz saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders, Hamza al Din, Pawel Szymanski, Jason Moran, and tabla master Zakir Hussain. Referred to as a visionary choreographer, he is highly influential on contemporary creations and on the way we see ballet today. His work is based on what he calls "thought structures," obeying the energies which govern the shapes and movement directions of everything that exists.Throughout his carreer, he collaborated with the Swedish Royal Ballet, the Ballet Bejart, the Hong Kong Ballet and many others.
In 1982 he founded his company based in San Francisco, the Alonzo King LINES Ballet, upon the idea of highlighting the new creative potential of traditional ballet. Consequently, he creates his choreographies on scores by Handel, Poulenc or Stravinsky, but also on music by jazz composers like Pharoah Sanders or world musicians such as Hamza El Din or Zakir Hussain.

Alonzo King, born in Georgia to civil-rights activists Slater King and Valencia King Nelson, is an American dancer and choreographer based in San Francisco.[2] King grew up in Georgia and California, and, as an adult, decided his contribution would be teaching and choreography.
