It's been a while, hasn't it?  I feel like it's been a while.

At some point last week my website was nuked so hard that my hosting provider basically just zipped my entire site up and sent it to me as an email attachment along with a note that reads like one of those letters they sent parents after their kids got blown up on D-Day.  As you know, I've been really slacker about updating this page over the last two years or so, but there was just something about looking at my entire life's work assembled in a WinRAR file that made me feel really… inspired.  We've done some cool shit on here, haven't we?  Let's do more.

So, I went old school.  I have no talent in design, so I just modeled the site off the old version that I made back when I was updating this page in Notepad using HTML that I'd taught myself in 1994, and, fuck it.  It's going to take some time to get the archives re-uploaded, and I'll put ads on here eventually, but whatever.  Just be a bit patient with me and we'll get there.

In the meantime, let's commemorate the impetu

Alexander Nevsky: Savior of the Kievan Rus’?

Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky was the Prince of Novgorod, the Grand Prince of Kiev, and the Grand Prince of Vladimir. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church and made a saint. He is regarded as a great leader and a hero by the Russian people. He has been the subject of books and films and is engrained in Russian memory as an important figure who saved Russia during a severe crisis. Indeed, he is still used as a patriotic figure in Russia today.

But who was Alexander Nevsky, and what did he do to achieve so much acclaim?

Early Life of Alexander Nevsky

On May 13, 1221 in the town of Pereslavl-Zalessky in the Grand Duchy of Vladimir, Alexander Yaroslavich was born to Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich and Feodosia Igorevna of Ryazan. He was named after the Christian martyr, Saint Alexander, a prominent bishop who was killed in captivity during the persecutions against Christians under the reign of Emperor Decius.

Alexander was a descendant of Yuri Dolgorukiy, a warrior and statesman who founded the city of Moscow. Althou

The Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky was born on May 30, 1220 in the city of Pereslavl-Zalessk. His father Yaroslav II, Theodore in Baptism (+1246), “a gentle, kindly and genial prince”, was the younger son of Vsevolod III Large Nest (+ 1212), brother of the Holy Prince Yuri Vsevolodovich (February 4). Saint Alexander’s mother, Theodosia Igorevna, a Ryazan princess, was Yaroslav’s third wife. Their older son was the Holy Prince Theodore (June 5), who departed to the Lord at age fifteen. Saint Alexander was their second son.

His childhood was spent at Pereslavl-Zalessk, where his father was prince. The princely tonsure of the lad Alexander (a ceremony of initiation to be soldier) was done in the Savior Transfiguration Cathedral of Pereslavl by Saint Simon, Bishop of Suzdal (May 10), one of the compilers of the Kiev Caves Paterikon (Lives of the Fathers). From this Elder-hierarch, Saint Alexander received his first blessing for military service in the name of God, to defend the Russian Church and the Russian Land.
