Arzell J. "Z. Z." Hill (September 30, 1935 – April 27, 1984)[1] was an American blues singer best known for his recordings in the 1970s and early 1980s, including his 1982 album for Malaco Records, Down Home, which stayed on the Billboard soul albumchart for nearly two years.[1] The track "Down Home Blues" has been called the best-known blues song of the 1980s.[2] According to the Texas State Historical Association, Hill "devised a combination of blues and contemporary soul styling and helped to restore the blues to modern black consciousness."[3]

Down Home is an album by the American blues musician Z. Z. Hill, released in 1982.[2][3] "Down Home Blues", the album's first track, was a crossover hit, and is regarded as a blues standard.[4][5] The song is said to be the best selling blues single of the 20th century.[6]
The album peaked at No. 209 on the Billboard 200.[7] It has sold more than 500,000 copies; for a time, it was Malaco Records' biggest seller.[8][9]
Production
Down Home was produced by Tommy Couch and Wolf Stephenson, and was recorded in Jackson, Mississippi.[10] "Down Home Blues" was written by George Jackson.[11]
Critical reception

Z.Z. Hill is a hugely underrated Soul and Blues singer, whose recording career began in the late Fifties, and continued up until his untimely death in 1984.
Born in Naples, Texas, Arzell Hill was part of a gospel group called The Spiritual Five, in the late Fifties.
The Spiritual Five were a Dallas based ensemble.
Arzell was hugely influenced by the likes of B. B. King, Sam Cooke, Bobby ‘Blue’ Bland and Wilson Pickett.
At the emergence of the Sixties, he was penning songs influenced by the sound and style these singers.
