Yasmeen Ghauri (یاسمین غوری‎; born March 23, 1971) is a retired Canadian model.

Biography[]

She was born in Montreal, Quebec to a German mother, Linda, and a Pakistani father, Moin Ghauri.

She was raised Muslim and had a difficult childhood, and was bullied by her classmates at school for her Pakistani heritage. She went with her parents for the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca when she was 12.

Career beginnings[]

When she was 17, she was discovered while working at a McDonald's restaurant by Montreal hairdresser and artistic director of Platine Coiffure, Edward Zaccharia. Soon after her discovery, there was a shift in mentality within the fashion industry, moving from predominantly Nordic-looking models to more "ethnic" models, a trend which she helped to inspire.

Yasmeen Ghauri is a Canadian former fashion model.[1] Ghauri is known for her walk also quoted as the "walk of life" by Tyra Banks.[2] Being Pakistani, she is one of the first women of South Asian descent to appear on the cover of Vogue.[3]

Early life and career

Ghauri was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada to a German mother and a Pakistani father who was born in Hyderabad, India and immigrated to Karachi when he was young. According to Ghauri, her paternal family ultimately has origins in Ghor, Afghanistan, and she has identified as being "half South [and] Central Asian.[4] Raised Muslim, Ghauri had a difficult childhood and was bullied by her classmates at school for her Pakistani heritage. Yasmeen: Femininity can be both or neither. It is your actions that make you strong or weak.

Your mother is German and your father is Pakistani. How has this influenced you?

Yasmeen: It has made me more open and understanding of other cultures and lifestyles. Having experienced racism firsthand it has made me a stronger more self-reliant person.

Who are the most important people in your life?

Yasmeen: My family and my boyfriend, because they stand behind me and love me unconditionally. I have been with my boyfriend for five years and am extremely happy.
