Joseph Clarkson
Biography
Joseph Clarkson is Postdoctoral Teaching Scholar at the University of Notre Dame where he completed his Ph.D. in Political Science in 2024. Joseph’s research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of political theory and international relations, including theories of state formation and sovereignty as well as the causes of war. His dissertation recovers the ongoing significance of the political thought of the Weimar-era jurist and social democratic theorist Hermann Heller. Joseph’s first book project builds on this foundation by exploring the interconnections between normative and descriptive theory in Heller’s theory of the modern state.
Prior to completing his doctorate, Joseph received an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Notre Dame. Before joining Notre Dame, Joseph studied Philosophy, Classics, and German through the University Scholars Program at Baylor University, where he received his B.A. in 2019. JOSEPH M. DEVINE, the sixth governor of North Dakota, was born in Wheeling, West Virginia on March 15, 1861. His early education was attained in the Wheeling public schools. He later attended and graduated from the University of West Virginia in Morgantown. In 1884 he moved to LaMoure County, Dakota Territory, where he was the superintendent of schools for ten years. Devine first entered politics as the lieutenant governor of North Dakota, a position he held from 1897 to 1898. On August 9, 1898 Governor Frank A. Briggs died in office, and Devine, who was the lieutenant governor at the time, assumed the duties of the governorship. During his tenure, educational improvements were promoted. After leaving the governorship, Devine won reelection as lieutenant governor, an office he held from 1899 to 1901. He also continued to stay active in the promotion of educational issues. He served as state superintendent of public instruction in 1900, as well as serving as superintendent of the State Training School in 1914. Biography
Joe Parent’s research examines how shifts in power affect cooperation. He is the author of Uniting States (Oxford, 2011), and coauthor (with Joe Uscinski) of American Conspiracy Theories (Oxford, 2014) and (with Paul MacDonald) Twilight of the Titans (Cornell 2018). He has published in the American Journal of Psychology, Foreign Affairs, International Security, Sociological Theory, History of Political Thought, and World Politics, assisted the National Intelligence Council on its Global Trends 2030 and Global Trends 2035 reports, and received a Fulbright fellowship in Rome and a Nobel Fellowship in Oslo. His research has been covered in The Atlantic, Cosmopolitan, FiveThirtyEight, Newsweek, the New Yorker, the New York Times, Scientific American, and Time, and on CBS “Sunday Morning”, Fox, MSNBC, NBC “Nightly News”, and NPR’s “This American Life”.
