Their deep Christian faith and award-winning talent were a huge part of their draw, but, most of all, it's their love that filled up fans' hearts. Rory Lee Feek, a native of Kansas, moved to Nashville as a single dad with his two daughters in 1995. He served in the Marines for eight years and even played in a country band while serving in Japan. Meanwhile, Joey Martin grew up in Indiana. As a young girl, she traveled around with her parents, performing at different venues and functions. Music was in their blood, but their paths hadn't yet crossed.

In the fall of 1998, twenty-three-year-old Joey Martin had left her tiny hometown of Alexandria, Indiana, and moved to Nashville, where she was working at a veterinary clinic for horses while she pursued her dream of becoming a singer.
Everyone advised her to attend a Writer’s Night at the ninety-seat Bluebird Café, a key networking location for singers and songwriters. On the schedule that night was a red-headed songwriter dressed in overalls. As Rory Feek sang the songs he had written, Joey was drawn to the way he wrote and talked, and to his presence: “He just had a real kindness to him.” The more he sang, the more she fell in love.
I don’t know who that man is, but I’m gonna marry him someday, she thought.
Then Rory introduced his two young daughters, and Joey realized he was already a family man. All the good ones are gone, she mourned.

Joey + Rory was an American country and bluegrass duo composed of singer-songwriters Rory Feek (born April 25, 1965) and Joey Feek (September 9, 1975 – March 4, 2016), who were husband and wife. Both members of the duo were vocalists and songwriters, with Rory also playing acoustic guitar. Rory Lee Feek had written singles for other artists prior to the duo's foundation. The duo was the third-place finalist on CMT's competition Can You Duet in 2008. The duo recorded eight studio albums for Vanguard Records and Gaither Music Group and charted three singles on Hot Country Songs.
History
Before the duo's foundation, Rory Lee Feek worked as a songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee, and continued to work as a songwriter as a member of Joey + Rory. Songs he wrote for other artists include Clay Walker's Top Five hit "The Chain of Love", Blake Shelton's Number One hit "Some Beach", Easton Corbin's "A Little More Country Than That", Blaine Larsen's 2005 hit, "How Do You Get That Lonely", and Jimmy Wayne's 2008 single "I Will".
