Student Gives Up a Dream, Saves a Life
To Daniel Huffman, the choice was easy. He gave up a kidney and his dream of playing college football so his grandmother could live.
“I love my grandmother to death and I knew this was just what I wanted to do,” Huffman said. “It was just as much for me as it was for her because I didn’t want to lose my grandmother.”
His sacrifice landed Huffman, 18, in Tallahassee, home of his favorite college team--the Florida State Seminoles--with a full scholarship as a student trainer. It’s also thrust him into the national spotlight--he’s appeared on Oprah and in People magazine. A TV movie is in the works.
Most important, the grandmother who helped rear him is thriving. More than a year after the kidney transplant, Shirlee Allison, 62, said she feels fantastic.
And Huffman said he feels blessed at the way things have turned out--even though he sometimes misses playing football.
“Every now and then when I hear the pads popping, there’s always this wish to be out there,” he said from his home in Rossville, Ill.

Daniel Huffman's story one of "love of family over football'
At Florida State University tonight, Daniel Huffman will watch his life flash before his eyes.
The beefy, 20-year-old sophomore will attend the Tallahassee premiere of a made-for-TV movie that chronicles the decision that changed his life: Three years ago, he gave up a football career to donate a kidney to his grandmother.
"It's good to see a movie like this come out," said a beaming FSU football coach Bobby Bowden, who plays himself in a cameo appearance in the movie. "The moral of this thing is so good."
Huffman appeared at an FSU news conference Wednesday with his grandmother, Shirlee Allison, who traveled from her home in Rossville, Ill.
"I celebrated my 64th birthday, which I never would have, if it hadn't been for organ donation," Mrs. Allison said. "At first, I didn't want anybody I knew to be a donor. I especially didn't want (Daniel) to do it because I knew what he would be giving up."
In 1996, Bowden was so touched by Huffman's story that he offered the high school student and startin
