John J. Hamre: Well, I would – I do want to say just a few things, but we should very quickly turn to Representative Castro. You know, America’s going through a journey at this stage. The last four years were confusing because I think President Obama – or, excuse me – President Trump gave the impression that we were doing a favor to Korea by having our troops there. That was wrong. You know, we weren’t rewarding Korea by having troops in Korea. We were helping ourselves, because we were deep partners with Korea. Our whole goal is to ensure that there is democracy and freedom on the Eurasian – on the Eurasian continent. And Korea is the great champion of that. And so having Korea be strong was a key criteria for us.

Their numbers growing, Latinos gain clout in new US Congress

A record 43 Latinos elected to the US Congress are set to take the oath of office in January, including the youngest woman ever elected, two Latinas from Texas, the first Latino to represent Ohio and a woman born in Ecuador.

A few are ascending to leadership roles, demonstrating the growing clout of the 57 million Latinos who live in the United States. New Mexico Representative Ben Ray Lujan will move into the fourth-highest position in Democratic leadership, becoming the highest-ranking Latino in the history of the House. In the Senate, Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto will become the first Latina ever in charge of the Democratic Party's campaign arm for Senate races.

Francisco Pedraza, a political scientist at University of California, Riverside, attributed the largest Latino representation ever to a larger turnout propelled by rhetoric from US President Donald Trump about immigrants, but he said much more needs to be done to bring out the Latino vote. Joaquin Castro

Joaquin Castro is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the 20th district of Texas.^[1]

His mother is famous in the Chicano community. Castro is the son of Maria "Rosie" Castro, a Chicano political activist who helped establish the Chicano political party La Raza Unida in the 1970s. in 1971, at the age of 23, Rosie Castro unsuccessfully ran for the San Antonio City Council.^[2]

He is the twin brother of San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro. Their father, schoolteacher Jesse Guzman, had once served as the director of Colegio Jacinto Trevino, founded in the height of the movement for and by Chicanos.^[3]

Joaquin Castro was born in San Antonio, Texas , September 16, 1974. He was raised in San Antonio' s Westside and attended Jefferson High School before leaving his hometown to attend Stanford University . He double majored in communications and political science and graduated with honors in 1996. He then attended Harvard Law School where he received his Juris Doctorate degree in 2000. J
