Belmiro Mendes de Azevedo (17 February 1938 – 29 November 2017) was a Portuguese entrepreneur, ranked by Forbes as the 605th richest person in the world (2008), as well as the 3rd richest in Portugal, with an estimated wealth of US$ 2 billion. He owned a controlling stake in Sonae SGPS, one of the largest business groups in Portugal, which also operates in Spain, Greece, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Brazil. Azevedo, a carpenter and a tailor's son from Marco de Canaveses, had a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Porto and an MBA from Harvard University.

    Belmiro Mendes de Azevedo (Marco de Canaveses, Portugal, 17 de febrero de 1938 - Oporto, 29 de noviembre de 2017[1]​) fue un empresario portugués. Fundador del Grupo Sonae, propietario de los supermercados Continente.

    Era el mayor de los ocho hijos de Manuel de Azevedo, carpintero y agricultor, y de Adelina Ferreira Mendes, costurera.

    En la instrucción primaria en Tuías, repitió en el primer año, según señaló el mismo, por culpa de un profesor incompetente. Sin embargo al año siguiente, gracias a otro profesor recuperó el tiempo perdido, llegando a hacer los cuatro años lectivos en apenas tres. Al no existir en el municipio ninguna escuela de enseñanza secundaria, se trasladó a Oporto cuando contaba 11 años, para poder proseguir los estudios en el Liceo Alexandre Herculano. En esta ciudad, fue a vivir con su tío y padrino, Belmiro Pinto da Mota, fiscal de obras, que además del nombre de bautismo, le proporcionó alojamiento en los astilleros de obras donde trabajaba.[2]

    It is with great nostalgia that I pen this tribute to Belmiro de Azevedo, ‘The Engineer’ as we affectionately called him.

    He was a remarkable entrepreneur, a leader, a visionary who challenged us constantly and someone who always wanted to do more.

    I met him in my youth, during the vibrant 1980s. Spending even a minute in his company gave you a feeling of excitement – if I could only convey his strength of personality, the depth in his eyes and the mischief in his smile.

    I seized an opportunity to join the Sonae Group 18 years ago. As was the dream of many professionals, it came true for me. ‘The Engineer’ himself interviewed me for the job, to this day, it was one of the most remarkable conversations I have ever had – it filled me with motivation and excitement – even joy. I will never forget it. Nor will I ever forget his exemplary morals and the culture of ethics and independence he fostered.
