John Cappelletti played defensive halfback as a sophmore when the lions had Franco Harris and Lydell Mitchell – Tailback during junior and senior years.
Cappelletti put together three straight 200-yard rushing games in the final month of the season, including a high of 220 against North Carolina State. In 1973, Cappelletti recieved the Maxwell Trophy, which is presented annually to the outstanding player in collegiate football. Cappelletti was also selected as Player-of-the-Year by ABC-TV, United Press International, the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association, the Walter Camp Foundation, and the Washington Touchdown Club. He also played in the hula and Senior bowl games.
Cappelletti’s career yardage total of 2,639 still ranks him No. 9 on the Lions’ all-time rushing list. Cappelletti still holds a number of Penn State ground-gaining records.

John Cappelletti Biography
John Cappelletti is a Penn State legend and member of the College Football Hall of Fame. Cappelletti was the 1973 Heisman Trophy winner while leading the Nittany Lions to an undefeated season. He ran for 1,522 yards and 17 touchdowns his senior seasons and 2,639 yards with 29 touchdowns over his two-year college career. His #22 jersey is the first and only number retired in Penn State Athletics. Cappalletti’s Heisman speech, dedicated to his brother, may be what he is remembered best for. Joey Cappalletti would die of leukemia three years later. As a senior, the older Cappalletti would score four touchdowns in a game after his brother asked for the feat for his 11th birthday. The close bond between brothers was chronicled in a book and subsequent movie both titled, Something for Joey. Following his college career, Cappalletti played ten seasons for the Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers.

John Cappelletti was born August 9, 1952, in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. He attended and played football for Monsignor Bonner High School. In 1969, he was selected first team All-Catholic and All-Delaware County. Cappelletti went on to play football in college for The Pennsylvania State University, under coach Joe Paterno.
In 1972, during Cappelletti's junior year, he had the third best year in Penn State history, rushing for 1,117 yards at the tailback position, although in his freshman and sophomore years Cappelletti played defensive back. Then, as a senior in 1973, he had the second best year in Penn State history, rushing for 1,522 yards. After leading Penn State to a victory in the Orange Bowl, that year Cappelletti was selected to receive the most prestigious award in college football, the Heisman Trophy, and still to this day remains the only Penn State football player to have that honor.
