Jewel's Biography
Jewel Kilcher was born in Payton, Utah on May 23, 1974. Her parent's names are Atz and Lenedra (or Nedra) Kilcher. Jewel has two brothers, Shane and Little Atz. The family soon moved to Anchorage, Alaska. Jewel's name comes from Nedra who's middle name is Jewel, and from her grandfather Yule (Juel in his homeland). When Nedra got Jewel and her brothers involved in creativity workshops, Jewel discovered her talent for singing. Jewel would often sing with her mother. The song "This Little Bird" is included on Jewel's Spirit. When Jewel was around 6 years old, she began performing with her parents for small audiences. Her father helped her learn to yodel. Two years later, Atz and Nedra divorced. Jewel and her brothers were sent to live with their father on their 800-acre homestead in Homer. Jewel enjoyed being alone to write stories and poetry. Jewel Kilcher (born May 23, 1974) is a singer-songwriter better known by her stage name, Jewel.
Early years
Jewel was born in Payson, Utah, but spent most of her young life growing up in Homer, Alaska, living with her father. The home she grew up in there did not have indoor plumbing, but a simple outhouse instead. She and her father sometimes earned a living by singing in bars and taverns. It was from these experiences she learned to yodel, a quality demonstrated in many of her songs. Her father was a Mormon, but they stopped attending the church shortly before she turned eight.
During high school, Jewel was known to spell her name 'Jule,' but she attributes this to simple playing with her name as teenagers are prone to do.
Jewel learned to play the guitar while on scholarship at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Interlochen, Michigan, where she majored in operatic voice. She started writing songs at the age of seventeen.

Jewel was raised near Homer, Alaska, where she grew up singing and yodeling as a musical duo with her father, Atz Kilcher, a local musician. At age fifteen, she received a partial scholarship to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where she studied operatic voice. After graduating, she began writing and performing at clubs and coffeehouses in San Diego, California.[2][3] Based on local media attention, she was offered a recording contract with Atlantic Records, which released her debut album Pieces of You in 1995.
