An in-demand specialist in conducting, choirs and choral music, Brett Weymark has been Artistic & Music Director of the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs since 2003. 

As a singer he’s performed with many of the finest vocal ensembles, as a chorus master he's worked with just about any major orchestra or opera company you could think of, and he’s probably conducted them all, too.

He studied singing and conducting at Sydney University and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and continued conducting studies with Simon Halsey, Vance George, Daniel Barenboim and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, amongst others.

His performances have included Bach’s Passions and Christmas Oratorio, the requiems of Mozart, Verdi, Duruflé and Fauré and Orff’s Carmina Burana. He is champion of Australian composers and has premiered works by Matthew Hindson, Elena Kats-Chernin, Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards and many others. Brett Weymark is regarded as one of Australia's foremost choral specialists, having led Sydney Philharmonia Choirs for over 20 years.​

Ahead of our upcoming Messiah performance, we sat down with Brett to trace his musical journey, learn more about what makes a choir tick, and discover just how many times he's conducted Handel's iconic masterpiece.

Tell us a bit about your musical journey. Was music a part of your childhood? How did you find your path as a conductor?

Oddly enough, I came from a fairly unmusical family and was lucky enough to go to a primary school that took music seriously. I think from the first day I wanted to play the piano and sing. I was lucky to tap into many opportunities on offer when I was growing up - from playing timpani in combined orchestras to conducting choirs at music camps. By the time I finished school, I wanted to either be a singer, actor or lawyer! Law lasted a year, I never got into NIDA, but I did end up singing in The Song Company and have never looked back. Sydney Philharmonia Choirs is Australia’s largest choral organisation. It presents its own annual concert series in the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall, City Recital Hall, and other venues in New South Wales, as well as serving as chorus for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Formed in 1920, it currently comprises the following choirs:

  • Sydney Philharmonia Chamber Singers, formerly the Sydney Philharmonia Motet Choir; an auditioned chamber choir of around 32 voices
  • Sydney Philharmonia Symphony Chorus; an auditioned choral orchestral choir of 100 voices
  • Vox; an auditioned young adult vocal ensemble for 18- to 30-year-olds
  • Sydney Philharmonia Festival Chorus; a large community choir of up to 450 voices
