Michelle Schimel is now serving her fifth term in the New York State Assembly for the 16th Assembly District. Prior to serving in the Assembly, Michelle was the Town Clerk of North Hempstead for eight years. Michelle is recognized in her community for her passion on the issues that affect New York, particularly the prevention of gun violence and protecting the environment. A full time legislator, Michelle has built a reputation for being one of the most effective and productive members of the New York State Assembly. Michelle was appointed to the Assembly leadership position of Chair of the Majority Conference. She sits on the Assembly Standing Committees on Governmental Operations, Local Governments, Environmental Conservation, Transportation and Veterans’ Affairs. For two decades, Michelle served on the Board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), the largest citizens' group in New York State dedicated to reducing gun-related violence. New Laws to protect and improve our environment
Environmental Protection Fund. This new law increases the Environmental Protection Fund to $300 million. The EPF was established in 1993 for capital projects that support clean air and water, protect the state’s environment and preserve open spaces and farmland (A.8339–Sweeney; Chapter 258 Laws of 2007).
Vehicle Global Warming Labels. This law requires that vehicle global warming index labels be affixed to motor vehicles manufactured for the model year 2009 and for subsequent model years. Under the bill, not only would these labels disclose a vehicle’s fuel efficiency, but also its score on the global warming index. The measure would inform consumers of a vehicle’s impact on air quality by requiring the disclosure of an automobile’s total carbon emission level (A.8839–Sweeney; Chapter 466 of the Laws of 2007).

Michelle Schimel is a former Democratic member of the New York State Assembly, representing District 16 from 2007 to 2017. She was elected to the chamber in a special election in March 2007. Schimel served as Majority Conference Chair from 2015 to 2017.
Schimel did not seek re-election to the New York State Assembly in 2016.
Schimel's political experience also includes registered municipal town clerk for the City of North Hempstead.
Biography
Schimel earned her B.A. from University of Pennsylvania.[1] Her professional experience includes being a former vice president of a jewelry company and a physical therapist at North Shore University Hospital.
