Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven & Hell with Black Sabbath

April 25, 2015
Black Sabbath's Master of Reality was the third album I ever bought. I think I was 11 years old. I had somehow developed a liking for rock music, maybe through my dad's penchant for '60s surf-music, I don't know. I had heard about Black Sabbath and was intrigued when I saw the album, I think at a K-mart. I had the money, so I bought it.

Mom was not terribly pleased.

But she didn't do anything rash about it. I just knew that if I wanted to listen to it, I had to do so at a low volume on my little red and white candystriped record player. Not that the equipment *could* be played loudly. It couldn't. But I leaned into it and did my best to damage my hearing with that little record player.

Needless to say, I was blown away. Tony Iommi became a bit of a guitar idol, okay, more like my Guitar God, as a young man plunking away on an old $25 Sears and Roebuck electric P.O.S. I loved the power and simplicity of what Iommi played. There was no need for technical prowess - his guitar simply SEETHED.

Biography & Career

Frank Anthony Iommi, best known as Tony Iommi, guitar player and composer, founder and leader of the group Black Sabbath is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential guitarists, and inventor of heavy metal music.

PRE-SABBATH PERIOD

Frank Anthony Iommi was born 19 February 1948 in Birmingham, England, the only son of Anthony Frank and Sylvie Maria Iommi. His father had a decisive influence on his son's musical tastes in that the father, as also all Tony’s uncles, played the accordion and taught his son to do so.

But Tony's musical aspirations lay elsewhere – he wanted to learn to play the drums – to be a drummer. Fortunately for heavy metal music, Tony opted for the electric guitar.

Years later when being interviewed he admitted that he had been seriously into martial arts and was convinced that this is where his future life. Today, the only connection Tony Iommi has with martial arts is that he is surely a black belt when it comes to heavy metal music.

His first guitar was a Watkins Rapier

Tony Iommi

Frank Anthony "Tony" Iommi (born 19 February 1948, in Birmingham, England) is a British guitarist and songwriter. He is most famous for starting the heavy metal band Black Sabbath. He is the only person who has stayed a member of the band since it began in 1968. He lost two finger tips in a work accident, and made two fake finger tips from a plastic bottle. This helped give Black Sabbath their heavy sound.

In 2003, Iommi was listed at number 86 in Rolling Stone Magazine's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" issue.[1]

Along with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Iommi is oft considered one of the greatest riff writers of all time. Iommi used several riffs in Black Sabbath's songs.

He was born to an Italian immigrant family and has dual Italian British citizenship.

In 2006 Tony Iommi was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
