What is up with Victoria? The B.C. capital enjoys a surplus of morbidly bent artists, including the Dada-esque accordion king David P. Smith and old-time comic nightmare cabaret weirdos Hank and Lily.

Add to the queasy list David Chenery and his splendidly ramshackle, “death-obsessed” roots outfit the Lonesome Valley Singers. The Summerland, B.C.–raised Chenery was the proverbial small-town punk before he landed in Victoria, finding himself in the sympathetic company of “outcast alcoholics listening to old country records”.

“I have a fear of dying,” Chenery tells the Straight, as his three-year-old daughter chatters in the background. “I grew up in a religious family, and I remember being in Sunday school with all these kids sitting around talking about the Crucifixion. It was disgusting, talking about the crown of thorns, and whipping, and spitting on him—when you're eight, that really makes a huge impact on you.”
