German reggae musician

Musical artist

Tilmann Otto (born 19 April 1974), better known by his stage name Gentleman, is a German reggae musician.

Personal life

Gentleman lives in the Neubrück area of Cologne.[1] He is the son of a Lutheran pastor and is the father of two children, named Samuel and Tamica. He is married to Tamika, a backing singer of the Far East Band, which has supported him since his first concert tour of Germany in 2002. Although regularly on tour and in the studio, Gentleman generally considers himself a rather family oriented person, which becomes apparent in his music projects such as his long-player Journey to Jah, which was inspired by the birth of his first son Samuel.[2] His song Mama from the collaborative album Conversations that he recorded with Ky-Mani Marley deals with his deep spiritual relationship to his mother.[3]

Music

Gentleman has travelled to Jamaica regularly since he was 18 years old.[1] His career began with the collaboration of the band Freund

Gentleman happy with his ‘Superior’ yet simple lifestyle

Worlds away from his music recording career, Gentleman now owns, and lives, on a farm located in Spain. In search of a more simplistic and fulfilling lifestyle, the singer relocated his family from the city of Cologne in Germany, to the hills on one of Spain’s islands, and has no regrets about doing so.

“I am one with nature now,” he told The Gleaner. “Being here has been incredibly valuable for my wife and children. Everything just moves so naturally and though some things have changed over the years, some don’t because our values used to raise our family and we want to achieve, are still the same.”

Life on the farm also helped Gentleman, whose given name is Tilmann Otto, and his wife Tamika, escape the hectic lives they once lived in the busy and crowded German city. “Now, on my farm I have had the opportunity to live independently from the system, that is, I don’t like the idea of having to depend on certain people. Where my family and I are, there are 300 days of sun

German reggae

With several international hits behind him and requests to perform in Japan, Israel, and even Surinam, German performer Gentleman is one of the nation's foremost reggae artists. He's also grown roots of respect in the genre's cradle, Jamaica, a place he calls his second home. Born Tillman Otto, he sings in fluent Patois.

In April, Gentleman released his fifth studio album, which shot to Number One. Its title, "Diversity," befits not only the variety of songs on it as Gentleman branches out musically, but also how Germany's most Jamaican-at-heart musician views the genre of reggae as a whole. Deutsche Welle caught up with the award-winning artist who divides his time between family life in Cologne and his Caribbean island of choice.
