Marty Stouffer (1948–)

Martin Luther Stouffer Jr. is a documentary filmmaker best known for his Wild America PBS television series involving endangered wildlife. Whereas many previous wildlife documentarians focused on filming in exotic locales in other countries, Stouffer primarily filmed in American locations in order to raise awareness of the plight of these animals.

Marty Stouffer was born on September 5, 1948, near Fort Smith (Sebastian County) and grew up there with his parents, Martin Sr. and Agnes, two brothers, and a sister. Stouffer Sr. owned Arkansas Rebuilders Supply, which supplied auto parts for rebuilders.

According to Stouffer, his parents encouraged him to explore the natural world; the woods and wild areas near his home awoke a love of nature in him, and his experiences with wildlife and nearby hunters and trappers awoke in him a desire to protect and preserve wild animals and wild spaces. It was nearly two years ago, and my wife and I were trying to figure out how to get a heavy sofa sleeper out of our son’s pickup and into our house. A vehicle pulled up, a fellow hopped out and offered to lend a hand. Moments later, mission accomplished, we were thanking him and asking his name.

“I’m Marty Stouffer, and I’m famous. Look me up!” And with that, he was gone.

That unexpected encounter led to me pulling the assignment to interview the creator of and force behind the highly popular “Wild America” television series that was broadcast on PBS between 1982 and 1994.

On a frosty morning in early February, I found myself on the way to his spacious house a short distance outside of Carbondale. The interior was full of mementos of his lifetime of adventuring and making wildlife documentaries and other programs – mounted animal heads, a spear, old camera equipment.

Martin Luther Stouffer Jr. (born September 5, 1948), is the narrator and producer of the wildlife and nature documentary television program Wild America that originally aired on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in the 1980s.

Stouffer was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. His name has been legally changed to Marty Stouffer. Along with his brother, Mark, he also produced the TV series of John Denver specials for ABC in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Another half-dozen one-hour Specials for the National Geographic Society were also produced during that same time period. Stouffer's special "The Predators" was narrated by Robert Redford and his special "The Man Who Loved Bears" was narrated by Will Geer and Henry Fonda.

Early influences

At age 19, Stouffer traveled to Alaska on his own with a Super 8 mm movie camera. He returned home to a warm reception by an audience of 1,800 local Arkansas residents in the Fort Smith Municipal Auditorium who turned out to view what was basically a home movie. To
